“Chitons of Mexico (Biology, Internal Morphology, Taxonomy and Distribution)”

Adriana Reyes-Gómez

Class - Theory  and Practice

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

The species of the class Polyplacophora in Mexican waters have been seldom studied by professional malacologists. Chitons are nonetheless a group of special interest, due to its life style and peculiar morphology. They have been present in the fossil record for over 450 million years. Chitons, then, have developed special feeding adaptions and characteristics that have allowed them to inhabit high energy environments in rocky areas, intertidal, coralline regions and the deep abyss over 5000m.

This class will emphasize species identification, their unique morphology as well as their distribution and diversity.

2. OBJETIVE

The aim of the course is to provide the basic elements for identification of chiton species and their internal and external morphological differences with regard to other mollusk groups, in order to promote the development and preservation of this group.
